The Indigenous Food and Freedom School (IFFS) is an emancipatory
land-based learning circle strategy that can scale deep into
indigenous strengths and knowledge.
We build communities around food
Building on the concept of Freedom Schools developed by the African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement in the US in the 1960’s, the IFFS develops and shares teachings needed for emancipatory action in relation to food.

Our vision is a just transition to regenerative tribal economies informed by Indigenous food sovereignty principles, paradigms, practices and protocols.

Our purpose is to share knowledge and strategies for increasing the ability of the Learning Community and Cohort to demonstrate a ‘living reality’ of IFS.

Our intention is to decentralize knowledge and leadership in the intersectionalities where Indigenous food sovereignty meets climate justice, capitalism, and coloniality.
Sharing our knowledge since 2016
Our Communities of Focus are communities who protect culture, health, and the land for future generations.
The Indigenous Food and Freedom School (IFFS) emerged from the collective insights and strategic analysis shared through the Indigenous Food System Networks. Since its beginnings, IFFS has amplified grassroots voices and visions within food sovereignty and food systems movements across diverse communities and scales.
We collaborate with a wide range of communities who steward traditional food systems and sustainable agriculture to artists, educators, and advocates advancing wellness, social justice, and environmental care, our work bridges generations, disciplines, and territories in the shared pursuit of food sovereignty and collective wellbeing.
Cwelcwelt Kuk (We Are Well):
Heal the People, Heal the Land
This short film highlights how the Cwelcwelt Kuk (We Are Well) Garden has become a fertile ground for Indigenous Food Sovereignty, a gathering space for land-based learning, and a vital site for Food Land Conservation in the region and beyond.
